Reconstruction of the Vilnius International Airport runway and light alarm system

As the result of the runway and related infrastructure reconstruction, the Vilnius International Airport has significantly increased safety of flights in especially bad weather conditions, as well as improved its competitiveness in the region.

JSC A.C.B carried out coordination of the restoration project of the Vilnius Airport infrastructure and reconstruction of more than 150,000m2 long covering during 35 days. Approximately 200 persons and 300 equipment and transportation units were involved in the project implementation.

Unlike in the current practice in Latvia, the development of project for the work performance was started after signing of the agreement, in which JSC A.C.B as the main contractor brought its own experience and innovations in the detailing of technical solutions. The project implementation was carried out by complying with the terms of the FIDIC Red Book, closely cooperating with the Latvian and Lithuanian specialists, local technical service providers and producers of materials.

A more serious challenge was meeting the initially established deadline of 35 days, when the Vilnius Airport was closed, directing aircraft to the Kaunas Airport. During this time, the construction works were carried out for 28 days in the 24-hour mode in various shifts, and the remaining 7 days were dedicated to various inspections and tests to open the airport for the aircraft traffic. This type of experience was unique not only to Lithuania, but also to Europe, as this was the first case when the main airport of the country moves all of its resources to another airport for the reconstruction purposes.

The project was awarded the 3rd place in the nomination Construction Abroad of the competition The Best Structure of the Year in Latvia 2017.
